I Tested Manus AI for 2 Weeks: The Agent That Runs Tasks

What Exactly Is Manus AI?

I’ve been obsessed with AI agents for a while now. GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude — I use them daily. But when I first heard about Manus AI claiming to be a “general AI agent,” I was skeptical. Another chatbot wrapper with a fancy landing page? After spending two solid weeks putting it through real-world tasks, I have to admit — this one’s different.

Manus AI isn’t a chatbot. It’s an autonomous agent that gets its own virtual computer environment to execute tasks. You describe what you need, and it breaks the work into steps, writes code, browses the web, manipulates files, and delivers results — all without you babysitting the process. Think of it as hiring a competent intern who works through the night and sends you a finished deliverable by morning.

“The best AI tool is one you can walk away from and come back to a finished result. Manus is the closest thing I’ve found to that reality.”

Setting Up: Easier Than Expected

Getting started was surprisingly painless. You sign up, get access to the dashboard, and start creating tasks immediately. There’s a web interface and a mobile app — I tested both. The QR code login for mobile was a nice touch. Within five minutes of creating my account, I had my first task running.

What caught my attention immediately was the connector system. Manus integrates with Google Calendar, Gmail, HubSpot, Slack, and dozens more services through what they call “Connectors.” Adding a Google Calendar integration took about 30 seconds — authenticate, grant permissions, done. After connecting my email, I asked Manus to create calendar events from my unread meeting invitations. It parsed 14 emails, created the correct events with times and locations, and even flagged two conflicts it found.

Real Tasks I Threw at Manus

I didn’t want to test Manus with toy examples. I used it for actual work tasks over two weeks. Here’s what happened:

Task 1: Resume Screening

I uploaded 15 resumes in a zip file for a junior developer position and asked Manus to rank candidates based on specific criteria: Python experience, open-source contributions, and relevant internships. It unzipped the files, read each resume, created a scoring rubric on its own, and delivered a ranked spreadsheet with notes on each candidate. The whole thing took about 8 minutes. Doing this manually would have cost me at least two hours.

Task 2: Market Research Report

I asked for a competitive analysis of project management tools — Notion, ClickUp, Linear, and Monday.com. Manus browsed their websites, pulled pricing data, feature comparisons, and recent review scores. It compiled a 12-page report with charts and even deployed a simple comparison website for me to share with my team. Honestly, the output was better than what I’d get from a freelancer on Fiverr.

Task 3: Data Analysis

I uploaded a CSV with 6 months of sales data and asked for trend analysis. Manus wrote Python scripts, generated visualizations, ran correlation analysis, and produced an interactive dashboard. The data visualization was genuinely impressive — color-coded, properly labeled, and with insights I hadn’t noticed in my own manual analysis.

How Manus Compares to Other AI Agents

Feature Manus AI ChatGPT (GPT-4o) Claude 3.5 Devin AI
Autonomous Execution Full (own VM) Limited (code interpreter) Limited (artifacts) Full (coding only)
Web Browsing Yes, unrestricted Yes, limited No native browsing Yes, dev-focused

Multi-step Planning Excellent Good Good Excellent (code tasks)
Pricing Free tier + paid plans $20/month Plus $20/month Pro $500/month
Best For General tasks, research, data Conversation, writing Analysis, coding Software engineering

The Good: What Surprised Me

The asynchronous nature of Manus is its killer feature. With ChatGPT or Claude, you sit there watching tokens stream. With Manus, you fire off a task, close your browser, and come back later. I started a complex research task at 11 PM, went to bed, and woke up to a thorough report waiting in my dashboard. That alone changes how you think about AI tools.

The error recovery impressed me too. During a web scraping task, Manus hit a CAPTCHA on one site. Instead of failing, it logged the issue, tried an alternative data source, and continued with the task. When I reviewed the execution log, I could see exactly where it adapted its approach. It felt like watching a human problem-solve in real time.

Custom connectors through MCP (Model Context Protocol) support means developers can extend Manus with their own APIs. I connected it to an internal company API in about 20 minutes using their documentation. For teams building custom workflows, this flexibility is massive.

The Bad: Where Manus Falls Short

It’s not perfect. The free tier gives you limited “messages” — I burned through them in about three days of active use. The token economy isn’t transparent enough; complex tasks eat through your allocation fast without clear indication of how much you’re spending.

Speed varies wildly depending on task complexity. Simple queries return in seconds, but multi-step tasks involving web browsing and code execution can take 10-20 minutes. If you need instant answers, stick with ChatGPT.

The mobile experience is functional but clearly an afterthought. Task creation works fine, but reviewing complex outputs — especially data visualizations and multi-page reports — is painful on a phone screen.

“Manus AI is brilliant for tasks you’d normally delegate to a human assistant. It’s overkill for questions you’d ask a chatbot. Know the difference, and you’ll love it.”

Who Should Actually Use Manus AI?

After two weeks of daily use, I think Manus fits a specific niche that other AI tools don’t cover well:

Freelancers and solopreneurs who need to do research, data analysis, and content compilation but can’t hire an assistant. Manus handles the grunt work while you focus on high-value tasks.

Sales and marketing teams who need lead research, competitive analysis, and automated CRM updates. The connector system makes this surprisingly smooth.

Developers who want to automate non-coding tasks — documentation generation, dependency audits, deployment scripts — without building custom automation.

It’s NOT for people who just want quick answers or casual conversation. For that, ChatGPT and Claude are still better, faster, and cheaper.

My Verdict After 2 Weeks

Manus AI represents what I think the next wave of AI tools looks like — agents that actually DO things rather than just TELL you things. The execution isn’t flawless; pricing could be more transparent, speed needs improvement for complex tasks, and the mobile app needs work. But the core concept — describe a task, walk away, get results — actually works. That’s more than I can say for most AI products I’ve tested.

I’m keeping it in my toolkit alongside ChatGPT for quick tasks and Claude for deep analysis. Manus fills the gap for everything that requires multiple steps, external data, and file manipulation. If you’re spending hours on repetitive research and data tasks, give it a shot with the free tier and see if it clicks.
